Short answer: a genuine New Zealand job offer always comes from an employer you can find on the Companies Register, and for a work visa that employer must also hold current INZ accreditation. If you cannot find both, treat the offer as unverified and pay nothing.
The four checks that settle it
- Find the employer on the Companies Register and NZBN. A trading name alone is not enough.
- Check the employer against Immigration New Zealand's accredited employer list. Without accreditation they cannot support an Accredited Employer Work Visa.
- Look at the email address. Immigration New Zealand writes from @immigration.govt.nz or @mbie.govt.nz, never from a lookalike domain.
- Check how old the website is. A company website registered a few weeks ago is a warning sign.
What a real offer does not do
A real New Zealand employer does not charge you for the job, for a Job Check, or for their own accreditation. Charging a worker a premium for employment is unlawful in New Zealand.
