NZ English Language Requirements — IELTS, PTE, TOEFL Scores for AEWV & Residence Visas

Find out exactly what English language evidence Immigration New Zealand requires for your visa — covering AEWV, Skilled Migrant, Straight to Residence, Parent and Partner visas. Based on the INZ Operational Manual (SR2.10 & WA4.12) and updated for the 1 June 2026 ANZSCO Level 3 changes.

NZ English Language Requirements — Why They Matter

English language requirements are one of the fastest-changing parts of New Zealand immigration policy. Since 1 June 2026, AEWV applicants in ANZSCO/NOL skill level 3 roles must show English at a defined standard, while level 1 and 2 roles remain exempt. For residence visa applicants and dependants over 16, separate IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, B2 First, OET and equivalent standards apply, each with its own minimum scores and validity windows.

The test you sit, the version (Academic vs General Training for IELTS), the issuing authority and the date of the result all matter. Most test results must be less than two years old when your application is lodged, although Skilled Migrant Category applicants who hold a relevant New Zealand occupational registration can use results up to five years old. Applicants from majority-English-speaking countries, or with qualifications taught in English, may also be exempt, but the exemption rules are narrow and INZ is strict about evidence.

This calculator covers every current visa pathway where English is assessed and tells you exactly which test scores would satisfy INZ for your specific application — including AEWV, Skilled Migrant, Straight to Residence and Parent visas. If your scores fall short, we can advise on resits, exemptions and timing strategies so you do not waste application fees.
